August 22-23, 2006 in Thames on the Coromandel Peninsula

Stacey had mentioned a stop in the Coromandel Peninsula, a location we had not been able to see on our previous visit. Located a couple hours southweast of Auckland, the region is noted for being a great spot for seeing local wildlife (especially birds), and for some remarkable coastal beaches. The spine of the peninsula is a large mountain range which you must travel through to get to the beaches on the west side, and it was a terrific drive for views. The towns (and people, therefore) are few and far between, making the region seem even more remote and special. Stacey and I visited Cathedral Cove (pictured) and had a short lunch there, which was interrupted briefly by a seagull attack. We had the beach practically to ourselves, with only a couple other people coming through. It was really nice. Incidentally, we stayed in a town called Thames where we had an excellent hotel, and some fun/good dining experiences. Nice town, highly recommended.
